A Bandwidth-Efficient Service for Local Information Dissemination in Sparse to Dense Roadways

Abstract: Thanks to the research on Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs), we will be able to deploy applications on roadways that will contribute to energy efficiency through a better planning of long trips. With this goal in mind, we have designed a gas/charging station advertising system, which takes advantage of the broadcast nature of the network. We have found that reducing the number of total sent packets is important, as it allows for a better use of the available bandwidth. We have designed improvements for a dist… Show more

“…Supporting efficient alert dissemination has been investigated in the context of multiple applications, namely distribution of alerts, warnings, or general information in VANET [3,4,6,7,8,11], in networked mobile devices [5,10,13,16,21], and in first responders ad-hoc networks [9,14,15,17,18,19]. Unlike published schemes, our ADS protocol is not tied to a certain application; it can be used in vehicular networks to improve road safety or in first responder application to enable efficient handling of disasters, etc.…”

“…We implement two mechanisms to achieve this goal. The first one is making use of an efficient multi-hop broadcast, described in [5]. The other one is making an important reduction in the number of replies, while keeping the quality of the requester's estimations.…”
