A bibliometric analysis of cultural heritage research in the humanities: The Web of Science as a tool of knowledge management

Abstract: Substantial research on the topic of cultural heritage has been conducted over the past two decades. At the same time, the overall output volume of journals and citation metrics have become important parameters in assessing and ranking researchers’ performance. Even though the scholarly interest in cultural heritage has recently increased world-wide, a comprehensive analysis of the publication output volume and its correlation to the shift in the cultural heritage regime starting in 2003 is still lacking. The … Show more

“…For analysis purposes, we utilised the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection database, renowned as one of the premier platforms for scientific citation search, discovery, and analytical information (Li et al 2018). Scholars frequently rely on this database for bibliometric analyses (Vlase and Lähdesmäki 2023). With its comprehensive coverage spanning articles from 1900 onwards (Chadegani et al 2013), the WoS database provides a robust foundation for gaining insights into trends in academic research on IEs' adjustment, a vital component of this study.…”

“…A rigorous bibliometric analysis can provide systematic insights into previous publications, which can not only delve into the academic research community of active and influential researchers, but also identify the current research topics, and further explore potential directions for future research (Fahimnia et al, 2015 ). Bibliometrics has been widely applied in a wide range of sectors and specific domains, for example, mapping and visualizing the knowledge progress avenues and research collaboration patterns of cultural heritage (Vlase and Lähdesmäki, 2023 ), analyzing the sub-areas and core aspects of disease (Baskaran et al, 2021 ), visualizing and graphing the evolution of research related to sustainable development goals (Belmonte-Ureña et al, 2021 ), and studying policies, such as agricultural policy (Fusco, 2021 ), medical information policy (Yuxi et al, 2018 ), and science, technology and innovation policy (Zhang et al, 2016 ). However, the research trajectory and focus of policy analysis around the world remain a black box.…”

“…In particular, bibliometric analysis can be successfully used by scholars to reveal the typical publication patterns at the levels of journals, individual authors, or research institutions, to explore collaboration patterns (Donthu et al, 2021;Kwiek, 2021;Vílchez-Román et al, 2020;Wijewickrema, 2022), or to study the spread of innovative technologies (Agarwal et al, 2022;Liu et al, 2019;Su et al, 2019). In recent years, scholars specializing in scientometrics from diverse countries have extensively conducted bibliometric analyses on national research output within the domain of A&H, utilizing essential core citation databases (for instance: Ardanuy et al, 2022;Bui Hoai et al, 2021;Golub et al, 2020;Mohsen, 2021;Vlase and Lähdesmäki, 2023). Moreover, the results of such research performed in the context of a particular country (see, e.g., Mryglod et al, 2021) can be used to improve national regulations of scientific activity or to perform cross-country analysis.…”
