A bibliometric analysis of literature on engineering research among BRIC countries

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to make a quantitative analysis and compare the scientific productivity in the area of engineering among the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) countries. Design/methodology/approach The data were collected from SCImago. Various parameters such as number of articles and citable articles, world share and rank, citations per paper and h-index, and international collaboration were analyzed. Findings There was a fluctuation trend in the pattern of international collabor… Show more

“…Thus, relevant themes of the Colombian engineering journals available in Scopus aim cover some of the conventional aspects of industrial engineering with hints of chemical engineering, mining engineering, food engineering, and artificial intelligence applications (neural networks, genetic algorithms), which contrasts with more recent engineering issues in international literature and which are present in the journals ranked in the higher quartiles (1 and 2), with higher citations: materials, physics, and astronomy, biophysics, biochemistry, ceramics, biotechnology or biomedical engineering, in which countries such as Brazil, Russia, India, and China have had significant progress [20]. This difference in subject matters may explain the low citation of articles-16 citations in the articles with the most citations in the last five years-and citations below the average for journals ranked in quartile 3.…”

“…Although, in the distribution of OA research output by institutions, among all the five BRICS countries, China ranked first as far as the prominent institutions and OA Journal publications are concerned. Similarly, Elango (2019) assessed that among the BRIC countries China holds 1 st ranked in the world in terms of a number of articles in the field of engineering research. In the contrast, Ligade and Dengale (2019) indicated that among BRICS countries India secured 2 nd position in terms of publishing research papers in science and engineering.…”

“…SJR database (http://www.scimagojr.com) is used to collect bibliometric information for the chosen countries. Nowadays, the SCImago database is also being used to analyse scientific productivity [9][10][11][12] . The present study covers the scientific productivity of these countries for a period of 21 years, 1998-2018.…”
