A bibliometric analysis of publications in computer networking research

Abstract: Computer networking is a major research discipline in computer science, electrical engineering, and computer engineering. The field has been actively growing, in terms of both research and development, for the past hundred years. This study uses the article content and metadata of four important computer networking periodicals) to address important bibliometrics questions. All of the venues are prestigious, yet they publish quite different research. The first two of these periodicals (COMST and TON) are highly… Show more

“…To do this, we use a manual data collection technique because the readily available databases in the WoS or Scopus were not available because the journals under this study have not been indexed in those databases. The metadata in these two databases is usually exported to CSV (comma separated values) format (Aribowo, 2019;Iqbal et al, 2019). While other researchers used the database available in WoS (Ellegaard & Wallin, 2015;Merigó & Yang, 2017;Nafade et al, 2018), Scopus (Iqbal et al, 2019) or both of them (Fabregat-Aibar et al, 2019), this research uses the database of each journal which is open for public called an open access journal so that anyone can download the entire articles for free.…”

“…Bibliometric analysis is the implementation of statistics and quantitative approach for research publications (Thomson Reuters, 2008). This analysis has been employed for different purposes, areas, and topics (Aribowo, 2019;Iqbal et al, 2019;Li, 2017) or on particular journals (Abdi et al, 2018;Barik & Jena, 2013;Jain et al, 2015;Khanna et al,2018;Kumar, 2014;Mahalakshmi et al, 2017;Ridhwan et al, 2013;Tallolli & Mulla, 2016;Tsay & Shu, 2010;Wang et al, 2018;Wei, 2019).…”

“…VOSviewer, developed by van Eck and Waltman [26], has many common bibliometric functions, including bibliographic coupling, co-authorship, co-occurrence, and co-citation analysis. The software has been widely used in scientometric analysis in many domains: Library and information science [29], medicine [30,31], computer science [32], biology [33], and education [34]. CiteSpace, developed by Chen [27], as a tool for producing knowledge maps, can identify and display new trends and developments in a subject area through analysis of the literature, and can detect the research progress, current research frontiers, and knowledge bases of such an area.…”

“…Thus, the visualization of network maps allows the scientific evaluation of a given area of knowledge, allowing discovery of changes, evolution, behavior and gaps over time, as well as trends (Avena & Barbosa, 2017;Giménez-Espert & Padro-Gascó, 2019;Ravelli et al, 2009). Research, Society and Development, v. 9, n. 10, e1699108624, 2020 (CC BY 4.0) | ISSN 2525-3409 | DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.33448/rsd-v9i10.8624 Indicators of bibliometric production can contribute to the management of Graduate Programs (Maciel, Faria, Milanez, & Lança, 2018) and to academic success by mapping the most cited articles, the most productive institutions, the preferred journals (Ravelli et al, 2009;Zeleznik & Kokol, 2017), current topic trends, growth in knowledge (Avena & Barbosa, 2017), as well as identifying relationships between subjects and areas of knowledge (Iqbal et al, 2019;Shi, Miao & Si, 2019). This study highlights the usability of bibliometric analysis to understand the scope of publications on this theme with university students, as well as the characteristics and the trend of publications, besides serving as a guide or example for other studies.…”
