A Bibliometric Analysis of the Literature on Irisin from 2012–2021

Abstract: Irisin is a hormone-like molecule mainly released by skeletal muscles in response to exercise, which is proposed to induce the ‘browning’ of white adipose tissue. Since its identification, irisin was reported to be closely associated with many metabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), obesity, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and metabolic bone diseases. In recent years, irisin has attracted increasing research interest, and numerous studies have been published in this field. Thus, it is esse… Show more

“…Irisin has been shown to induce anti‐apoptotic actions in various diseases. Previous studies have shown that irisin could inhibit apoptosis including cardiomyocyte apoptosis, endothelial cell apoptosis and pancreatic β cell apoptosis by the Akt, ERK, p38 MAPK, and TLR/MyD88 signaling pathway 31 . Irisin could also protect nucleus pulposus cells against senescence and apoptosis by activating autophagy 32 .…”

“…Furthermore, NLRP3 inflammasome activation is also responsible for vascular endothelial dysfunction in diabetes. 31 Irisin could also protect nucleus pulposus cells against senescence and apoptosis by activating autophagy. 32 And our previous study has also shown that irisin can activate the Akt/eNOS pathway which considered as a survival pathway, and Akt/eNOS pathway may play an important role in the anti-apoptosis effects of irisin.…”

“…Irisin is the best-recognized myokine [ 87 ]; it is secreted by myocytes and adipocytes, and is also referred to as an adipomyokine [ 88 ]. Its levels depend on muscle mass and physical activity levels [ 89 ].…”

“…Bibliometric analysis and visualization are not only more effective methods to assess the thematic development of structural contents. More importantly, it can help researchers to better understand comprehensively about hotspots, frontiers, and trends in particular topic [5][6][7]. Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-E) of Web of Science (WOS) Core Collection Database is widely used as an important tool for scientific statistics and scientific evaluation [8].…”
