A bibliometric assessment of ASEAN collaboration in plant biotechnology

Abstract: This study draws on publication and citation data related to plant biotechnology from a 10-year (2004-2013) period to assess the research performance, impact, and collaboration of member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Plant biotechnology is one of the main areas of cooperation between ASEAN member states and among the research areas promoted to achieve regional food security and sustainable development. In general, findings indicate increased scientific output, influence, and ov… Show more

“…In these studies, trends of articles and citations per publication by year (Chuang, Olaiya, & Ho, 2012), citations per publication and country's number of articles by type of collaboration and authorship (Chuang & Ho, 2015), and percentage of publications and number of journals in each Web of Science category (Monge-Nájera & Ho, 2017b) found a general increase in quantity and quality over the years. However, there are fewer studies along the same line for the Asian tropics (Payumo & Sutton, 2015).…”

“…Intra-ASEAN collaboration accounted for just 4.0 per cent of all international collaborations. Payumo and Sutton (2015), working on a bibliometric assessment of ASEAN collaboration in plant biotechnology, one of the main areas of cooperation for regional food security and sustainable development in ASEAN, found very limited evidence for regional collaboration or partnership. Such a pattern emerged despite a common aspiration for regional integration through research collaboration, raising concern for regional integration and S&T cooperation among ASEAN universities.…”
