A Bibliometric Review of Technostress: Historical Roots, Evolution and Central Publications of a Growing Research Field

Abstract: While previous research has provided critical insights into the different perspectives, methods, and theories on technostress, there is no bibliometric review available that clarifies the evolution and structure of the field. We use three bibliometric methods to assess the body of 252 technostress publications until 2019: reference publication year spectroscopy, co-word analysis, and co-citation analysis. In doing so, we analyze how the technostress field has evolved over time, clarify the interconnected conce… Show more

“…Technostress has been examined in various fields, including health care, library science, public service and higher education (Tarafdar et al , 2011; Grummeck-Braant et al , 2021; Ayyagari, 2007; Davis, 2020). Research indicates that since the emergence of COVID-19, employees have been facing increased levels of technostress, characterized by greater techno-overload, techno-invasion, techno-complexity, techno-insecurity and techno-uncertainty (Davis, 2020).…”

“…The effects of technostress on individuals have been explored in terms of physiological, psychological and behavioral outcomes. Physiological symptoms, such as elevated heart rate and hormone levels, as well as psychological consequences like decreased job satisfaction, organizational commitment and feelings of exhaustion, have been identified (Grummeck-Braant et al , 2021; Davis, 2020). Moreover, technostress has been associated with negative changes in behavior, including reduced productivity and innovation, increased intentions to leave the job, noncompliant behavior and role stress (Grummeck-Braant et al , 2021; Davis, 2020).…”

“…In the literature on the subject of technostress, there are more disadvantages or demands (Li, Wang, 2021;Penado Abilleira et al, 2021;Upadhyaya, Vrinda, 2021). By definition, stress is usually interpreted as something negative (Grummeck-Braamt et al, 2021). In HEIs, as in many other sectors, the COVID-19 pandemic was the catalyst of change towards online education but also technostress (Boyer-Davis, 2020;Galvin et al, 2021;Penado Abilleira et al, 2021).…”

“…Research on technostress in e-commerce is scarce and furthermore does not yet address the stress process to its full extent. Responding to the call for research by Tarafdar et al (2019) and Grummeeck-Braamt et al (2021) [11,43], we investigate which stressors occur in an e-commerce context and analyze their effects. Drawing on the transactional stress model, we suggest an effect of technology-induced stressors on the evaluation of situational factors -i.e.…”
