A Bibliometric Study of the Use of the Classification and Diagnostic Systems in Psychiatry over the Last 25 Years

Abstract: Background: Our purpose was to examine the use of classification and diagnostic systems in the field of psychiatry (CDSP) from a bibliometric perspective, over the period 1980–2005. Methods: We selected (in EMBASE and MEDLINE databases) documents that contained, in any of their sections, the descriptors ‘psychiatr*’, ‘DSM*’, ‘ICD*’, or ‘diagnostic criteria’,as well as other more specific descriptors. “…It experienced a linear growth instead. This linear increment was consistent with publications in adjacent research fields such as psychiatry (López-Muñoz et al, 2008b) and psychopharmacology (López-Muñoz et al, 2013). On the other hand, there was an exponential increase in publications in melatonin (López-Muñoz et al, 2016), bipolar disorder (López-Muñoz et al, 2006) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (López-Muñoz et al, 2008a).…”

“…With bibliometric studies, our group has studied the evolution of scientific literature in psychiatry by specific research groups, on different psychiatric disorders, on aspects related to the discipline, and on specific therapeutic tools in psychopharmacology [7][8][9][10][11]. Here, we specifically did this bibliometric study on SGA publications in Japan.…”

“…Even though associations have been reported between self-harm and physical illnesses such as epilepsy, migraine, asthma, diabetes and eczema [13], evidence is limited—especially among adolescents and young adults. The majority of psychiatric research, and that of North American origin in particular, has used classification criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) [17]. Hence, potential associations between physical illnesses and a range of psychiatric disorders including self-harm might not have been as easily studied and identified, since the DSM is a system for psychiatric disorders only, while the ICD system covers all areas of health.…”
