A bimodal accessibility analysis of Australia’s statistical areas

Abstract: The map presented in this paper summarises the combined land-and airside accessibility within Australia. To this end, we calculate a bimodal accessibility index at the scale of statistical units by aggregating the (shortest) travel time for three route segments: (1) road travel from the origin to a departure airport, (2) air travel, and (3) road travel from an arrival airport to the destination. The average travel time from a statistical unit to all other statistical units is calculated for the units' populati… Show more

“…It can be divided into two categories: the ease of transportation availability, measured in terms of temporal or spatial distance, and the magnitude of opportunities for interaction, measured in terms of out-ofdistance or weights between two nodes [5]. Airport accessibility is mainly categorized into ground transportation accessibility [6] and route network accessibility [7]. The former is mainly measured by the benefit-cost ratio index [8], cost function [9], gravity model [10], graph theory [11], mixed nested logit model [12], and other models that can be used to analyse an airport's industrial radiation to the local area.…”

“…Section 2 presents a literature review dealing, in turn, with the concept of (bimodal) accessibility and approaches for collecting web-based travel data. In section 3, we elaborate our analytical strategy, briefly introduced in Meire, Derudder, and Ooms (2019). The first subsection provides a description of our Australian study area, including a discussion of the selection and configuration of origins, destinations and airports.…”
