A bleaching herbicidal activity of methoxyhygromycin (MHM) produced by an actinomycete strainStreptomycessp. 8E-12

Abstract: Aims: To screen bioherbicidal isolates and evaluate herbicidal activity of methoxyhygromycin (MHM) produced by Streptomyces sp. 8E-12. Methods and Results: Streptomyces sp. 8E-12 with herbicidal activity was selected through seed germination bioassay. An active metabolite, MHM was isolated from culture broth by carbon absorption, butanol extraction, silica gel, Sephadex LH-20 and G-10 chromatography, and preparative HPLC. The metabolite was identified by electrospray ionization mass spectra (ESI-MS) and 1 H-an… Show more

“…A fourth evaluation of in vivo herbicidal activity of M. roridum F0252 against 15 plants was performed both in pre-and post-plant emergence by a whole plant spray method (Lee et al, 2003). Bioherbicidal activity of the ground culture broth containing conidia and mycelial fragments and an ethyl acetate (EtOAc) extract of the broth were tested on pots (surface area×height=350 cm 2 ×8 cm) containing 15 plants using a hand sprayer, according to the method by Lee et al (2003).…”

The 13 weedy plants tested against were velvetleaf (Abutilon avicennae), Indian jointvetch (Aeschynomene indica), cheatgrass (Agropyron smithii), bindweed (Calystegia japonica), large crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis), barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli), monochoria (Monochoria vaginalis), fall panicum (Panicum dichotomiflorum), arrowhead (Sagittaria pygmaea), bulrush (Scirpus juncoides), black nightshade (Solanum nigrum), clover (Trifolium repens), and cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium), and the two crops represented were rice (Oryza sativa) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor).…”

“…HygA also displays strong in vitro potency against Serpulina (Treponema) hyodysenteriae (Nakagawa et al, 1987; Omura et al, 1987), the causative agent of swine dysentery, an economically significant muco-hemorrhagic disease of pigs. In addition, HygA and its derivatives have been reported to have herbicidal (Kim et al, 1990; Lee et al, 2003) as well as immunosuppressant properties (Uyeda et al, 2001; Yoshida et al, 1986). Biochemical studies indicate that HygA inhibits translation by binding to the peptidyl transferase center (PTC) on the large ribosomal subunit and preventing the binding of aminoacyl-tRNA to the A-site (Guerrero and Modolell, 1980; Polacek et al, 2002; Poulsen et al, 2000).…”
