“…The mean age of patients with benign cause was 42.7 years and that with malignant cause was 50.6 years. Our study correlates with the findings of studies by Huang JQ et al (1993) 8 12 and Lerttumnongtum P et al (2002), 13 the corresponding sensitivity of CT was 66.7% -90.9%, specificity 77.8% -100.0%, PPV 89.3% -100.0%, NPV 87.5% -94.4%, and p value was <0.001. In the present study, the statistical analysis of MDCT in determining the malignant cause of obstruction had sensitivity, specificity, specificity, PPV and Diagnostic Accuracy was 96.97%, 98%, 100% and 95% respectively with p value of <0.001% which is statistically significant.…”

“…Transabdominal US (US) remains the initial imaging test of choice in the evaluation of suspected biliary obstruction because it is noninvasive, inexpensive, and readily available 9 27–34. Dilated ducts are usually taken as indirect evidence of biliary obstruction 9 32 33 35–38. The presence of normal ducts, however, does not exclude obstruction 9 32 33 35–38.…”

“…Dilated ducts are usually taken as indirect evidence of biliary obstruction 9 32 33 35–38. The presence of normal ducts, however, does not exclude obstruction 9 32 33 35–38. This is mainly because, in certain cases, biliary obstruction may not be accompanied by dilatation of the CBD.…”

“…Not all authorities agree with this noninvasive imperative. In fact, 3 of the 4 authors cited in support of a noninvasive first test agree that in selected cases, direct ductal visualization is the appropriate initial study (6)(7)(8). In principle, no diagnostic test should be undertaken unless it is likely to alter medical management.…”
