Fifth-generation and beyond (5G and xG) wireless networks are envisioned to meet the requirements of various vertical applications that require higher traffic throughput, ultra-massive connectivity, extremely low latency, and high quality of service. Disruptive technologies, such as massive multiple-input multiple-output, millimeter wave, and multiple access are being deployed to meet these requirements. However, the deployment of these technologies poses several challenges, including the lack of network transparency, management decentralization, and reliability. In addition, the heterogeneity of these networks raises security concerns, particularly, confidentiality, privacy, and trustworthiness. Typically, networks rely on encryption techniques at higher layers to ensure security and privacy. However, due to the emergence of novel computing paradigms, such as quantum computing, traditional security approaches are no longer sufficient to protect over-the-air communications. Therefore, 5G/xG networks must consider smarter and more efficient security techniques to operate seamlessly and efficiently. Within this context, physical layer security (PLS) and blockchain represent promising solutions to complement existing methods. By exploiting the characteristics of wireless links, PLS can enhance the security of wireless communications, while blockchain can guarantee the decentralization, integrity, and trustworthiness of networks. Motivated by these technological advancements, this paper provides an in-depth review of the existing literature on PLS and blockchain. Then, for the first time, we present a framework for the integration of PLS with blockchain in 5G/xG systems. We begin by providing a thorough discussion about the potential of PLS and blockchain for 5G/xG systems. Next, we present our vision of a cross-layer architecture that leverages both PLS and blockchain in 5G/xG networks. Finally, we identify related challenges and open issues and shed light on future research directions.

Recently, integrating satellite networks (e.g. Lowearth-orbit satellite constellation) into the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem has emerged as a potential paradigm to provide more reliable, ubiquitous and seamless network services. The LEO satellite networks serves as a key enabler to transform the connectivity across industries and geographical border. Despite the convenience brought from the LEO satellite networks, it arises security concerns, in which the essential one is to secure the communication between the IoT devices and the LEO satellite network. However, some challenges inheriting from the LEO satellite networks need to be considered : 1) the dynamic topology; 2) the resource-constraint satellites; 3) the relative long latency; 4) multiple beams authentication. In particular, the centralized authentication schemes are no longer suitable for the emerging LEO satellite assisted IoT ecosystem. In this paper, we first introduce the architecture of the LEO satellite network assisted IoT ecosystem. Then, we propose an efficient and privacy-preserving blockchain-based authentication scheme. The proposed authentication scheme takes the advantages of certificateless encryption and consortium blockchain to provide lightweight key pair computation without appealing devices' information and efficient signature querying and verification. In addition, a fast authentication mechanism is implemented in the scheme in order to reduce the time complexity from querying a certain record for the authentication within a satellite among multiple beams. With the analysis of the storage and computation complexity, the performance evaluation demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Satellite networks can provide a wider service range and lower delay than traditional terrestrial optical fiber networks. However, due to the bursty characteristic of the Internet traffic and the distributive feature of satellite links, traffic-intensive areas often suffer from link congestion while links in other areas are underutilized, i.e., the traffic imbalance problem in LEO satellite networks. In this paper, an ant colony optimization routing algorithm with window reduction for LEO satellite networks, ACORA-WR, is proposed to achieve load balancing. ACORA-WR limits the movement of the ant colony to a specific range and comprehensively considers the path distance, transmission direction, and link load to find a path with low delay and overhead. Simulation results verify that the proposed ACORA-WR scheme demonstrates high data delivery ratio and network throughput, while ensuring low average delay and network transmission overhead.
