A Blockchain Prototype for Improving Electronic Seals on Container Shipping Operations

Abstract: With the widespread use of electronic seals (e-seals), their traceability and security have attracted more and more attention. Moreover, the complexity of shipping operations and container handling justifies the use of technologies to ensure information security in the face of attacks. This work contributes a blockchain-based solution with a simulated prototype for improving electronic seals for containers on terminals in ports. An electronic seal was designed, and a blockchain prototype was constructed for a … Show more

“…Lastly, in the context of protecting communication systems, Ruhland et al [110] introduced MARMAC, a cost-effective method for retrofitting and protecting nautical communication systems. On the other hand, Le et al [111] combined blockchain with electronic seals (e-seals) to enhance data security and traceability during port terminal operations. Not to be left out, Yang et al [91] proposed an IoT-powered system focusing on maritime transport communication systems to promote network security, reliability, and efficiency.…”

“…Before the COVID-19 pandemic, maritime ports grappled with challenges in labour force management. Issues such as allocating labour for enhanced efficiency, addressing workforce management challenges, anticipating industry changes, evaluating performance effectively, and adapting to evolving requirements were already critical focal points [2] , [3] , [4] . However, ports and terminals are the elements of the marine industry that experienced higher disruption due to the pandemic.…”
