A BPMN-based process map for the design and construction of façades

Abstract: Process mapping can lead to significant efficiency and quality improvements in construction engineering and is an ideal basis for developing IT support tools. The increasing complexity and multidisciplinary nature of façade design and construction suggest that a process map would be beneficial in this sector of the construction industry, but it has received limited attention to date. This paper presents a verified process map of the façade design and construction process. The map is the first of its kind to re… Show more

“…Enables a BIM project to be conducted much more effectively. In more detail, an IDM has three parts: a Process Map (PM) [41], Exchange Requirements (ERs) [42] and Functional Parts (FPs). The PM consists of a flow-chart containing all the steps that must be undertaken throughout the process, as well as the connections between them.…”

“…The process does not normally back cycle except for unforeseen design errors or manufacturing constraints (Kassem & Mitchell, 2015). A detailed, BPMN-based process map of a façade design process for a traditional procurement route has been developed by Voss, Jin, and Overend (2013).…”

“…The energy performance of the ACTRESS MFM and of its components was investigated through a numerical analysis, carried out with the help of two integrated software tools: Autodesk REVIT (BIM tool) and IES VE (whole-BPS tool). A BIM parametrical model was developed with REVIT for the ACTRESS MFM together with the prototype manufacturer in order to provide sufficient flexibility in the architectural design and manufacturing of the facade, and supporting information to the other stakeholders in the facade design process, among the other facade consultants and Building Energy modellers (Voss, Jin & Overend, 2013). Full details of the ACTRESS BIM modelling could be found in Favoino (2010).…”
