A Brief Review on Vitamin B12 Deficiency Looking at Some Case Study Reports in Adults

Abstract: In the era of evidence-based medicine, the randomized clinical trial corresponds to the top step in the qualitative scale of the evidence available in the literature, while small series of cases or the description of individual cases occupy the last place. However, the latter represent an important part of clinical practice and have significantly influenced the evolution of medicine, contributing significantly to the advancement of scientific knowledge. “…The essential role of cobalamin (Figure A, more commonly known as vitamin B 12 when the upper ligand is the cyanide anion) in human metabolism has been appreciated since its discovery in 1948 as the cure for pernicious anemia. Cobalamin (Figure ) consists of a highly decorated corrin ring containing a central cobalt atom linked by a three-carbon moiety (replaced by a two-carbon moiety in norcobalamin) to a 3′-phosphoribose that contains at the 1′ position a dimethylbenzimidazole (DMB) group that coordinates the cobalt in the α face . The central cobalt ion gives cobalamin its unique role as a cofactor.…”

“…Some researches show that tea is an excellent means of enriching the diet with folate and vitamin B12. In India, such a project has the potential to help eliminate certain hematological and neurological complications resulting from inadequate nutrition or poor absorption of folate and vitamin B12 [45].…”

“…Although often required in small amounts and designated as “micronutrients”, vitamins have proven critical for maintaining normal physiology. Their absence or deficiency is known to cause disorders or diseases such as anemia [ 1 ], beriberi [ 2 ], pellagra [ 3 ], scurvy [ 4 ], night blindness [ 5 ], and blood coagulation disorders [ 6 ]. The study of vitamins has advanced significantly during the last century, being recognized by the Nobel Prize Committee in the form of numerous awards for vitamin-related research since 1928 [ 7 ].…”
