A Broadband Left-Handed Metamaterial Microstrip Antenna with Double-Fractal Layers

Abstract: This paper proposes a microstrip patch antenna based on the left-handed metamaterial concept, using planar periodic geometry, which results in improved characteristics. This periodic geometry is derived from fractal shapes, which have been widely used in antenna engineering. The metamaterial property was obtained as a result of the double-fractal structure on both the upper and the bottom sides of the antenna. The final structure has been optimized to enhance bandwidth, gain, and radiation characteristics of t… Show more

“…It also results in gain and efficiency reduction, additional to that it deteriorates the signal-tonoise-ratio [13][14][15][16]. Several decoupling methods have been used, these include but are not limited to meta-materials [17], photonic band gap structure [18], electronic band-gap structure [19], and these methods are discussed in literature review below.…”

“…Fractal tree is another desirable fractal structure that is utilized in antenna topologies [15], [16]. In this paper, design of a fractal MTM tree microstrip array antenna was proposed and the effect of the geometry and number of the branches of the proposed structure at antenna specifications could be investigated [14], [17].…”
