“…In the NE of Iberia, isolated Châtelperronian artifacts have been recovered from Ermitons and L’Arbreda, occurring in recurrent centripetal Levallois assemblages, leading them to be defined as Mousterian with Châtelperronian points [129,130]. In addition, a poorly diagnostic early Upper Paleolithic assemblage from layer 497D at Cova Gran de Santa Linya has been cautiously related to the Châtelperronian from other locations [131,132]. 497D overlies the Middle Paleolithic layer 1B characterized by recurrent centripetal Levallois technology.…”

“…Only eleven lithic remains have been recovered from layer Xa at Ekain, six of these being retouched blades or bladelets. In layer 497D from Cova Gran de Santa Linya the flaking strategies are also strongly blade oriented, and reduction from single and opposed platforms prismatic cores [144] dominates the assemblage, while Discoid or Levallois cores characterizing the underlying Middle Paleolithic occupations are not documented [132]. Châtelperronian assemblages from Aranbaltza and Morin layer 10 are surely the largest well-defined collections available, showing both a preponderance of structured, volumetric laminar strategies, dominated by laminar cores, but with centripetal flake cores and micro-Levallois production also evidenced [36,40].…”

“…These plotted pieces constitute a significant sam-ple to test the occurrence of hiatuses in the vertical distribution of archaeological finds (e.g. Adler et al 2003;Anderson et al 2018;Baena Preysler and Torres Navas 2019;Bargalló et al 2016;Bunn et al 1980;Canals et al 2003;Chadelle 2000;Diez-Martín et al 2014Gravina et al 2018;López-Ortega et al 2017;Machado et al 2013Machado et al , 2019Martínez-Moreno et al 2004, Martínez-Moreno et al 2019Mora et al 2018;Real et al 2018;Sánchez-Romero et al 2017;Sañudo et al 2016;Vaquero 2008;Vaquero et al 2015). The plotted finds, despite their relative high num-ber, do not constitute a dense enough cloud of points suitable to perform the vertical profiles analysis along 25 or 20 cm wide transects.…”

“…Regarding the northern part of the Mediterranean region, the Early Aurignacian is documented in L'Arbreda (Wood et al 2014), Romaní (Bischoff et al 1994) and Cova Foradada (Calafell) (Morales et al 2019) in the latter preceded of a Chatêlperronian level, and in other assemblages whose stratigraphies include the Middle Palaeolithic and the EUP, such as Cova Gran (Mora et al 2018;Martínez-Moreno et al 2019). The chronological framework for the end of the Middle Palaeolithic north of the Ebro River is dated between 43.8 and 41.8 ka cal BP, and the Protoaurignacian/Early Aurignacian of L'Arbreda and Romaní is dated between 42.3 and 41 ka cal BP (Morales et al 2019).…”
