A Calculation Method for Interconnected Timber Elements Using Wood-Wood Connections

Abstract: Wood-wood connections, widely used in the past, have been progressively replaced by steel fasteners in timber constructions. Currently, they can be manufactured and implemented more efficiently thanks to digital fabrication techniques. In addition, with the emergence of new timber plate engineered products, digitally produced wood-wood connections have been developed with a strong focus on complex free-form geometries. The gained knowledge through research and building implementations have pushed the developme… Show more

“…In buildings consisting of parts created at different times, using different methods, weak spots usually occur at the junction of different types of construction, at the point where they are connected [20]. It is expected that the most sensitive element of the building will be the intersection of the two oldest parts, the nave and the presbytery and, In buildings consisting of parts created at different times, using different methods, weak spots usually occur at the junction of different types of construction, at the point where they are connected [20].…”

“…For connections used in timber structures, the initial stiffness may be computed from the F-δ response as the secant stiffness either at 40% of the estimated peak capacity [23] or between 0.1F peak and 0.4F peak [24]. Some authors (see [25]) adopted the method recommended in [26] for the calculation of bending elastic modulus for timber members, based on a linear regression analysis of the F-δ response between 0.1F peak and 0.4F peak .…”

“…Our collaborative design workflow has first been tested on a piece of timber slab consisting of 4 panels connected by through tenon joints (Figure 6). This construction system was initially developed with the idea of shipping flat packs of timber panels to be assembled on-site (Gamerro et al, 2020). Using our parametric tool, timber joints are automatically generated between the panels.…”
