A capabilities-based model for adaptive organizations

Abstract: Multiagent systems have become popular over the last few years for building complex, adaptive systems in a distributed, heterogeneous setting. Multiagent systems tend to be more robust and, in many cases, more efficient than single monolithic applications. However, unpredictable application environments make multiagent systems susceptible to individual failures that can significantly reduce its ability to accomplish its overall goal. The problem is that multiagent systems are typically designed to work within … Show more

“…There are several existing frameworks for such modelling in the literature [Dignum 2003;VazquezSalceda et al 2005;Sierra et al 2004;Deloach et al 2008]. However, we mainly build on the ideas presented by Jin and Levitt [1996], Ferber and Gutknecht [1998] and Hannoun et al [2000].…”

“…Organization-based multiagent systems engineering has been proposed as a way to design complex adaptable systems [4]. Agents interact and can be given tasks depending on their individual capabilities.…”

“…Section VIII concludes and presents some ideas for future work. The multiagent systems model that we are using throughout the paper is the Organization Model for Adaptive Computational Systems (OMACS) [4]. The basic OMACS metamodel is given in Figure 1.…”

“…We are able to use the notion of system traces because the framework we are using to build multiagent systems constructs mathematically specified models (e.g [10,11]) of various aspects of the system (goal model, role model, etc.). This can be leveraged to formally specify policies as restrictions of system traces.…”

“…The multiagent systems model we are using for this paper is called the Organization Model for Adaptive Computational Systems (OMACS) [10]. Figure 1 is a graphical depiction of the OMACS model.…”
