A case of Candida guilliermondii abortion in an Arab mare

Abstract: Ascending infections of equine uterus frequently result in placentitis and abortions; most of these infections are bacterial and are less commonly due to fungi. This report describes an abortion case in an Arab mare due to Candida guilliermondii that was diagnosed via cytological, histological, cultural and biomolecular assays. The histological lesions found were severe necrotizing placentitis associated with fetal pneumonia. To our knowledge this is the first case of C. guilliermondii abortion reported in equ… Show more

“…neoformans, G. candidum, R. rubra and Trichosporon cutaneum in sheep and goats [4] and Candida glabrata, Candida famata, C. guilliermondii and T. beigelii in lions [5]. Fungal infections of the vagina, cervix and endometrium can result in stillbirth and neonatal death in cows, buffaloes, dogs and cats [6][7][8][9], and abortion in horses [10][11][12][13][14].…”

“…are rarely isolated in conjunction with placentitis or abortion, in agreement with the low incidence of this organism in mare reproductive swabs (Hong et al, 1993a;Whitwell, 1988;Albihn et al, 2003;Rickets, 2011;Beltaire et al, 2012). A recent case description of Candida (Meyerozyma) guilliermondii described changes in the placenta similar to other mycotic placental lesions with a thick, brown, gritty covering of the chorionic surface centred mainly around the cervical star region (Stefanetti et al, 2014). Yeast were present in the necrotic superficial debris but absent in the foetal tissues (Stefanetti et al, 2014).…”
