A Case of Heterotopic Pregnancy with Tubal Rupture

Abstract: Heterotopic Pregnancy (HP) is the simultaneous development of an intra-uterine pregnancy and ectopic pregnancy. In natural cycle, it is a very rare event. With the increasing popularity of ovulation induction performed during assisted reproductive techniques, its incidence has significantly increased. However, diagnosis is often delayed because of its rarity and difficulty. Heterotopic pregnancy is an important differential diagnosis to consider in patients with intra-uterine pregnancies presenting with acute … Show more

“…In this case the diagnosis of heterotopic pregnancy was accurately made with the use of transvaginal ultrasound, which allowed for timely diagnosis and management before grave consequences occurred. The ectopic pregnancy was ruptured and was diagnosed promptly by the presence of free fluid intraperitoneally in a background of a dropping hemoglobin level [ 24 ]. Intraoperatively, the ruptured right ectopic pregnancy was readily noted with the confirmation of a simultaneous intrauterine pregnancy.…”

“…The most common site of heterotopic pregnancy is the ampulla portion of the fallopian tube, as it was the case in our patient, which is diagnosed when symptoms present. Patients with previous tubal surgeries are at an increased risk for this condition (7). The history of implementing an intrauterine device in patients with pelvic inflammatory diseases increases the risk of ectopic pregnancy (8).…”

“…Heterotopic pregnancy is a rare gynecological entity characterized by simultaneous intrauterine and extrauterine pregnancies [1]. The incidence of heterotopic pregnancy, which is estimated at about 1:7,000 to 1:50,000 pregnancies in the general population, has been reported to be 0.09% to 1.00% of pregnancies when using assisted fertilization techniques [2][3][4][5].…”
