A case of human diarrhea caused by Gallibacterium anatis: a case report

Abstract: Background Gallibacterium anatis (G. anatis) is a gram-negative bacterium of the Pasteurellaceae family that resides normally in the reproductive and respiratory tracts in poultry. It is an opportunistic pathogen previously associated with deaths in poultry and is also a pathogen that rarely causes human diseases. G. anatis has only been reported twice in France as the causative agent of a human disease. Here, we report a case of diarrhea caused by this bacterium in a patient with hypertension and type 2 dia… Show more

“…The presented data confirm that the presence of G. anatis extends beyond avian species, suggesting its potential role as an opportunistic pathogen, albeit infrequently, in dairy calves. Notably, occurrences of G. anatis have also been documented in immunocompromised human patients, leading to bacteremia, respiratory tract disease, and diarrhea [ 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 ]. In addition to poultry, cattle thus also represent a potential reservoir for the zoonotic transmission of G. anatis .…”

“…Its significance in poultry has recently been comprehensively reviewed [ 2 , 3 ]. While G. anatis is infrequently isolated and characterized as an opportunistic pathogen in mammals, particularly in cattle [ 1 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ], it has also been found in a range of human cases including chronic bronchitis [ 9 ], lung abscess [ 10 ], bacteremia leading to death in an immunocompromised patient [ 11 ], and cases of diarrhea [ 12 ].…”
