A Case of Localized Malignant Peritoneal Mesothelioma With Lung Cancer Detected by 18F-FDG PET/CT

Abstract: A 62-year-old woman was referred for cough and lower abdominal pain. 18F-FDG PET/CT showed strong uptake not only in the left lung mass and hilar and mediastinal lymph nodes, but also a huge lower abdominal mass. All lesions were initially thought to be multiple metastases because bronchial biopsy of the lung mass showed poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. However, the abdominal mass was found to be malignant peritoneal mesothelioma after surgical resection. It was difficult to diagnose this case correctly b… Show more

“…This study confirms that LMPeM in women is indeed a rare tumor as the 18 cases presented herein were collected in a large tertiary oncologic center over a 43-year period. This is in concordance with the English literature where 43 of such cases have been reported in a span of 26 years (1995 to 2021) 1–22,28,29. The mean and median ages were slightly higher than that reported in the literature (57 and 55 y, respectively, vs. 53.7 and 54 y, respectively) 1–22,28,29.…”

This study presents for the first time the ethnic distribution of women affected by LMPeM who were mostly Caucasians (80%), followed by African Americans (13%) and Hispanics (7%).…”

“…Accurate evaluation of disease extent is crucial to guiding cytoreductive surgery among patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis. 1,2 However, 18 F-FDG PET/CT sometimes has low-moderate sensitivity in the detection of peritoneal carcinomatosis, [3][4][5][6][7][8] probably due to the physiological uptake in the intestinal cavity and small size of peritoneal carcinomatosis. This case presented an example where 68 Ga-FAPI outperformed 18 F-FDG PET/CT in evaluating peritoneal carcinomatosis.…”
