A Case Of Neuroendocrine Carcinoma Expressing Myeloid Markers By Flow Cytometry And Review Of the Literature

Abstract: Flow cytometric markers are not entirely sensitive or specific, and aberrant expression or lack of expression of certain markers can complicate interpretation, particularly when this is done in isolation (i.e., in reference laboratories). Whenever possible, clinical and morphologic correlation is strongly recommended. © 2016 International Clinical Cytometry Society.

“…A case of mediastinal neuroendocrine carcinoma, initially thought to be mediastinal lymphoma, has also been reported (13). Furthermore, Harrison et al reported a case of neuroendocrine carcinoma with bone marrow metastasis mimicking myeloid malignancy (14). The carcinoma cells invading the bone marrow resembled immature myeloid cells and expressed several myeloid cell markers, including CD13 and CD117 (14).…”

“…Recent studies have shown that small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the uterus frequently has many different chromosomal abnormalities (10). Indeed, bone marrow-invaded neuroendocrine carcinoma cells have complex chromosomal abnormalities resembling those in MDS (14). Our present case also showed complex chromosomal abnormalities involving chromosomes 5, 8 and 9.…”

“…Leukemic phase and bone marrow infiltration combined with CD56‐ and CD117‐positive phenotype can be a rare presentation of NENs 1‐3 . The differential diagnosis of these neoplasms with acute leukemia, as well as with rhabdomyosarcoma, small‐cell carcinoma, and Ewing sarcoma, should be sought when these atypical data are obtained following a bone marrow aspirate.…”

“…An unusual case of CD45– CD56+ CD117+ neuroendocrine small cell lung carcinoma extensively infiltrating the bone marrow is described by Harrison et al , stressing the many possible misleading cytometric features that may characterize metastatic solid tumors.…”
