A case of ovarian metastasis of gall bladder carcinoma simulating primary ovarian neoplasm: diagnostic pitfalls and review of literature

Abstract: The ovary is a relatively frequent site of metastases from malignant neoplasia arising elsewhere in the body, the majority of these originating from the gastrointestinal tract. The best-known tumor of this type is signet ring cell adenocarcinoma (Krukenberg tumor) of gastric origin and large bowel. The gall bladder and bile ducts are extremely rare sources of these metastases. The casuistic describes a female patient, presented with pelvic mass and jaundice. While clinical and imaging results suggested a prima… Show more

“…The presence of signet-ring cells in a carcinoma within the cervix or in other organs of the genital tract strongly suggests the possibility of a metastasis from a primary tumour of the breast or gastrointestinal tract [3,6-9]. Immunohistochemical and molecular studies have provided information for differential diagnosis in some instances.…”

“…Signet-ring cells are most frequently associated with stomach cancer [1], but may be observed in any tissue including the prostate [2] bladder, gallbladder [3] breast, and colon [4] as well as in stromal tumours of the ovary and testis [5]. …”

“…Nous rapportons deux cas supplémentaires. La découverte de ces métastases ovariennes se fait de manière concomitante avec le diagnostic de la tumeur primitive ce qui suggère d'emblée leur nature métastatique (cas 1) [7, 8]. Parfois, ces métastases surviennent à distance du diagnostic initial (cas 2) ou encore le précède [5].…”

“…It is an older, broad descriptive term embracing a wide spectrum of biological behaviour of neoplasms from the benign and borderline to malignant lesions. PMP is usually associated with a mucinous neoplasm in the appendix that demonstrates fairly bland well differentiated mucinous epithelium often with minimal nuclear features of malignancy and minimal or no invasion [10,11]. …”
