A Case of Placenta Increta Mimicking Submucous Leiomyoma

Abstract: In recent years with the increase in cesarean section rates, the frequency of placenta accreta cases rises. It causes 33–50% of all emergency peripartum hysterectomies. We present a 42-year-old case who was caught with early postpartum hemorrhage due to retained placental products. The ultrasonography showed a 65 × 84 mm mass in the uterine cavity after the delivery. Due to presence of early postpartum hemorrhage which needs transfusion, an intervention decision was made. The patient underwent curettage but th… Show more

“…[ 13 ] There was a significant relationship between delivery through cesarean section and ETN, and it was observed more in males, which was similar to findings of the previous studies . [ 13 , 21 ] The reason for male predominance is uncertain, but the adrenal and gonadal androgen levels in male newborns were elevated, which may have a direct impact on sebaceous glands, which are included in the pathogenesis of ETN. There were more commonly seen in term neonates with normal birth weight, which was similar to the similar study findings.…”

“…It is rapidly becoming a major cause of obstetric complications worldwide and it is a major contributor to maternal morbidity and mortality, reflecting the recent escalation in the cesarean delivery rate. It accounts for 33-50% of all emergency peripartum hysterectomies (17). The identified risk factors for placenta accreta include both demographic (multiparity, age) and obstetric factors (previous uterine surgery or curettage, uterine infections, placenta previa, or operative delivery).…”

“…Prior reports have described that retained invasive placenta may mimic acquired arteriovenous malformation [ 18 ], leiomyomata [ 19 ], and endometrial cancer [ 20 ]. Therefore, it is important to consider the diagnosis of retained invasive placenta in patients presenting with PPH who have risk factors for invasive placentation.…”
