A Case of Postpartum Ovarian Vein Thrombosis

Abstract: Ovarian vein thrombosis (OVT) is an rare condition, which can present in the postpartum period. We present a case of a 35-year-old female who presented with right lower quadrant pain and fever. Her computed tomography (CT) abdomen revealed a dilated right ovarian vein with soft tissue attenuation material in its lumen that extended into the inferior vena cava, along with fat stranding of the surrounding soft tissues signifying thrombophlebitis. She was treated with enoxaparin and piperacillin-tazobactam, which… Show more

“…The incidence of POVT varies between 0.05% and 0.18%, which is much lower than the incidence of postpartum deep vein thrombosis of the lower limbs, and the incidence of POVT is higher after cesarean section than after vaginal delivery. 2,3 The occurrence of POVT on the right side may be associated with the local compression and expansion of the right ovarian vein caused by dextrorotation of the uterus after delivery. 4…”

“…2 Therefore, prompt diagnosis and treatment of such condition are important to prevent morbidity and mortality related to thrombosis and associated infections. 3 OVT can be diagnosed based on clinical signs such as abdominal pain and fever in combination with abnormal imaging findings that include ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) scan, 4 and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). 5 Here, we present a rare case of postpartum left ovarian vein thrombosis (LOVT).…”
