A Case of Pulmonary Hamartoma Showing Rapid Growth

Abstract: A 65-year-old man was admitted for detailed examination of a growing nodular shadow in the left lung. The nodular shadow was initially detected in a routine chest X-ray check-up in March 2012 that warranted regular chest X-ray follow-up. The nodular shadow increased in size from 12 × 15 mm to 15 × 20 mm within five months. The calculated tumor doubling time (TDT) in our case was approximately 132.2 days. A malignant tumor was strongly suspected based on the rapid growth, and tumorectomy was thus performed. Car… Show more

“…PH is more frequent in men than in women, with a male-to-female ratio of 2:1 or 3:1 and a peak incidence during the sixth decade of life. These benign lesions are very slow-growing tumors with a size less than 4 cm, although rapid growth [ 7 ] and giant mass have been reported in the literature [ 8 ]. The main CT features that allow a confident diagnosis of PH are intranodular fat and popcorn-like calcifications [ [2] , [3] , [4] ].…”

“…Quant à la PET FDG, certains rapports sur les hamartomes dé-crivent la difficulté à les différencier des tumeurs malignes par son caractère accumulatif anormalement de FDG [12].…”

“…4 If cartilage tissue predominates, it is termed as chondroid hamartoma, which are only 1% of all pulmonary hamartomas. 5 The size usually ranges from 1 to 4 cm with average size of 2 cm. Majority of the lesions arise from connective tissue in the peripheral lung parenchyma, with only 10% originating from the lining of the bronchi.…”
