“…Unfortunately, the type of asbestos fiber to which this population was exposed is rather difficult to assess, given the design employed. Other studies have reported an increased frequency of small-cell lung cancer in relation to rnixed and cornplex exposures to asbestos (13)(14).…”

“…These figures correspond to 8-10% of all lung cancers diagnosed annually in Finland. Previous Nordic studies have estimated the population attributable fraction of asbestos exposure in lung cancer among men to be 19% in the greater Helsinki area (22), 23% in Telemark (23), and 16% in Göteborg (24). These are all highly industrialized areas and the population attributable fraction has been estimated to be 14% and 0.6% for lung cancer among men and women, respectively, in Finland overall (8) and 5% for lung cancer among men in the Nordic countries overall (25).…”

“…On the other hand, it is likely that asbestos has also been extensively used in other parts of the country with similar industrial structures. In a study on the distribution of occupational determinants for lung cancer in Telemark and the neighboring county, Vestfold, Kjuus et al (11) found that previous asbestos exposure was present to the same extent among lung cancer patients in both counties. When studying the occurrence of mesothelioma in Norway, Mowe (15) observed considerable regional variations, but cases of the disease were found in all but one of the 19 counties in the country.…”
