A Case Report on Biliary Ascariasis

Abstract: Biliary Ascariasis occurs when Ascaris lumbricoides worms invade the biliary system. It may cause biliary obstruction, cholangitis, cholecystitis, or acute pancreatitis. We report a case of a 37-year-old female patient who presented with a history of upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and weight loss for two weeks. Ultrasound showed dilated common bile duct with linear tubular echogenic structure in the common bile duct and bowel loops. Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio pancreatography (ERCP) revealed large… Show more

“…Adult worms generate eggs that are expelled in the feces, completing the life cycle [8] . In hepatobiliary ascariasis, worms can travel from the duodenum to the biliary and pancreatic ducts, causing inflammation in these organs [2 , 6 , 7] . Hepatobiliary ascariasis can have various clinical presentations [9] .…”

“…The diagnosis and management of biliary ascariasis present a distinct difficulty, necessitating increased awareness, particularly in areas where the parasite is prevalent. The movement of live worms into the biliary tree can cause a variety of clinical symptoms, ranging from cases without symptoms to serious problems such as liver and bile duct inflammation [2] . The diagnostic process often includes a combination of clinical assessment, laboratory tests, and advanced imaging techniques, with ultrasound being particularly important for seeing the distinctive characteristics of biliary ascariasis [3] .…”
