A case study approach to the examination of a telephone‐based health coaching intervention in facilitating behaviour change for adults with Type 2 diabetes

Abstract: Health coaching has a positive impact on health behaviours for those with diabetes. Health coaching facilitates an increase in personal control of health and builds confidence in self-managing diabetes. Patients feel really supported and become motivated towards self-care.

“…Planned education programmes caused mild improvements in glycaemic control in the short term (Minet et al, ; Norris, Lau, Smith, Schmid, & Engelgau, ). However, education‐based studies cannot ensure the necessary behavioural changes required for healthy DM management in the short term (McGloin, Timmins, Coates, & Boore, ). Indeed, the behavioural intervention regarding nutrition, physical exercise, and medication use is more effective in ensuring permanent development of glycaemic control.…”

“…Telephone support has been increasingly used in recent years in health care 36 to facilitate patients’ access to their health care providers and is a cost-effective approach to support behavioral health changes for patients with diabetes. 37 , 38 Patients with COPD often experience insufficient support from their health care providers because too little time is allocated in the outpatient clinic, which leads to a lack of access to resources to help them cope with day-to-day problems. 39 Telephone support for long-term conditions has potential benefits for self-efficacy, health behavior, and health status because it can gradually improve patients’ skills and tailor support to the individual patient’s needs.…”

“…Examples of such studies include a mixed-methods diabetes telemonitoring study [26], using a Web-enabled glucometer for self-monitoring blood glucose, and a home-based monitoring study [27] including a randomized controlled trial and a series of interviews that used a transmission device to be attached to an analog telephone line or via USB to a computer to upload blood glucose and blood pressure measurements to a server. In addition, there were telephone coaching and counseling studies (ie, [28,29]) that did not match the inclusion criteria. The studies related to diabetic retinography were also excluded.…”
