A Case Study of a Case Study: Analysis of a Robust Qualitative Research Methodology

Abstract: A unique multi-part qualitative study methodology is presented from a study which tracked the transformative journeys of four career-changing women from STEM fields into secondary education. The article analyzes the study’s use of archived writing, journaling, participant-generated photography, interviews, member-checking, and reflexive analytical memos. An exploration into the interconnectedness of the methodologies used reveals a robust framework from which the first stages of grounded theory emerged. A deta… Show more

“…To gain an in-depth understanding of the unit of analysis (Cantina Cellaro), a case study approach (Snyder, 2012;Yazan, 2015;Yin, 1994) was adopted, assuming that it was most appropriate in examining the corporate decision-making process (Chetty, 1996). The authors of this paper considered this choice consonant with the research aims from Yin's perspective (1994).…”

“…The data include responses to the following exit survey prompt: “Please share with us the changes you have seen as a result of LearningRx training.” The survey was completed outside the presence of LearningRx staff members, which increased objectivity in responses from the participants and strengthened the integrity of the qualitative data (Tetnowski, 2015). The analysis employed grounded methodology and summative content analysis (Snyder, 2012) by annotating and evaluating participant comments without prior expectations of the outcome. In addition, the qualitative researcher was blinded to the treatment condition of the participants to achieve objectivity in audit and to increase rigor (Houghton, Casey, Shaw, & Murphy, 2013).…”
