A Catalogue of Galaxies within 10 MPC

Abstract: A catalogue is given of the 179 known galaxies within 10 Mpc. The inclusion of a galaxy depends on its redshift (vo 5 500 km s-l) or, in the case of 7 dwarf galaxies, on the fact that their distances are known to be small. The catalogue contains in addition 52 more distant galaxies with vo 5 500 km s-l: 50 are bona fide Virgo cluster members and 2 are members of the Leo group. Positions, types, absorption-corrected luminosities, and velocities are given for the catalogue galaxies. The catalogue is believed t o… Show more

“…Kraan-Korteweg & Tammann (1979) have made the first attempt to compile such a sample. Their list included 179 galaxies with radial velocities V LG < 500 km/s relative to the centroid of the Local Group.…”

“…Systematic searches for dwarf membersÈand in particular dE membersÈin these nearby groups have barely begun. Our present work is part of a long-standing e †ort to survey the local extragalactic neighborhood out to D B 10 Mpc, which may be regarded as the only fair sample of the universe (Kraan- Korteweg & Tammann 1979 ;Schmidt & Boller 1992a ;Karachentsev & Tikhonov 1994 ;Karachentseva & Karachentsev 1998 ;Bremnes, Binggeli, & Prugniel 1998, hereafter BBP98).…”

“…However, the number of observed narrow lines has been small in the past. For example, the first systematic catalog of nearby galaxies (v 0 ≤ 500 km s −1 ) by Kraan-Korteweg & Tammann (1979) contained 54 galaxies with line widths smaller than 50 km s −1 out of 179 galaxies. These numbers do not contain the faint dwarf spheroidals which are not accessible to spectroscopic emission line observations due to their low gas content.…”
