A cavernous hemangioma of the thyroid gland: First documentation by ultrasound of a rare pathology

Abstract: Hemangioma of the thyroid gland is an extremely rare condition. We report a case of a primary cavernous hemangioma in the left lobe of the thyroid gland in an 84-year-old woman. Ultrasound examination of the lesion showed an inhomogeneous and hypoechoic nodule that was well demarcated from the rest of the left lobe and hypovascular on color Doppler ultrasound. Ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration was performed. The cytologic differential diagnosis included an anaplastic carcinoma of the thyroid gland. Afte… Show more

“…Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computerized tomography (CT), and ultrasound imaging are all useful in IH diagnosis. [11][12][13][14] Both MRI and CT often require general anesthesia in young children and are expensive to repeat. Given these considerations, ultrasound imaging is appealing for use in this population as a rapid and noninvasive means of evaluating IH size and monitoring propranolol therapy.…”

“…Imaging of IH pre‐ and posttreatment may be a helpful adjunct to quantify therapeutic response and determine duration of therapy. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computerized tomography (CT), and ultrasound imaging are all useful in IH diagnosis 11–14 . “…4 To further understand the US characteristics of thyroid hemangioma, we searched the literature in PubMed and found eight reports describing the US diagnosis of thyroid hemangioma. 2,6,[9][10][11][12][13][14] The sonographic characteristic of thyroid hemangiomas included heterogeneous and hypoechoic tumors with clear boundaries and different shapes. The tumors usually had internal multiple linear septations due to the presence of multiple vascular channels.…”

“…[ 1 , 2 ] The primary hemangioma in thyroid gland is extremely rare, and only a few cases have been previously reported. [ 3 5 ] Primary thyroid hemangiomas are considered as a developmental anomaly that is associated with an inability of angioblastic mesenchyma. [ 6 ] Generally, no prominent clinical manifestations but a cervical mass can be found in the patient with thyroid hemangioma.…”
