A check-list of Ensifera from Algeria (Insecta: Orthoptera)

Abstract: Today Chopard’s 1943, “les Orthoptéroides d’Afrique du Nord", is still the reference book to work on Algerian Ensifera. 49 cricket (Grylloidea) species (16 genera) and 46 katydid and bushcricket (Tettigonioidea, Tettigoniidae) species (21 genera) were then mentioned, in addition to Lezina peyerimhoffi Chopard, 1929 (Stenopelmatidae). Since that time, no recent synthesis has been proposed for Algerian Ensifera, while their taxonomy changed deeply and new species have been described. In the present paper, we pro… Show more

“…In accordance with Massa [18], the presence at Pantelleria of phytophagous species strictly linked to allochthonous plants, imported to the island in the last decades, is certainly the proof of a speedy immigration of insects, at least concerning small and light species driven by the winds. However, the present fauna and flora of Pantelleria are more related to their Italian than to their North African counterparts ( [17], [18], [19], [20],…”

“…This species is distributed across Portugal, the southern half of Spain and in Morocco (Eades et al, 2013in Vega & Segura, 2013. Mohamed Sahnoun et al, (2010) mentioned in his checklist 12 species belonging to this genus in different local of the Algerian territories while Vega and Segura, (2013) The Sciobia genus has been reported by several authors as a food source for some species: it was consumed by barn owl (Tyto alba (Scopoli 1769) (Aves : Strigiformes)) in Morocco (Rihane, 2005), by coot (Fulica atra (L. 1758) (Aves : Rallidae)) in Algeria (Metna, 2012) and by Algerian hedgehog (Atelerix algirus (Lerboullet 1842) (Mammalia : Erinaceidae)) in Algeria (Mimoun, 2006). In this work during the characterization of the trophic menu of Bubulcus ibis in the El Kala region, we discovered for the first time the presence of the species S.(S.) bolivari (Chopard 1937) in Algeria.…”

“…Members of the genus Pseudomogoplistes are highly unusual for crickets in that they occur very close to the sea, under cobbles and amongst shingle near to the upper strand line (Sutton 1999(Sutton , 2015Benton 2012;Dusoulier 2017). P. vicentae is known to occur in small and apparently isolated populations in four places in the U.K. (Branscombe, Devon, Marloes sands and Dale beaches, Pembrokeshire and Chesil Beach, Dorset), the Channel Islands (Sark and Guernsey), France (Brittany and Normandy), the Atlantic coast of Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Algeria (Habibas Islands) and the Canary Islands (Gorochov 1996;Sutton 1999Sutton , 2015Sutton et al 2017;Morère and Livory 1999;Livory et al 2000;Sahnoun et al 2010;Benton 2012;Hochkirch et al 2016a, b;Kleukers et al 2018). Where the species does occur, the populations tend to be found within very restricted areas of suitable habitat (Timmins 1994b;Sutton 1999Sutton , 2015Sutton et al 2017;Hudson 2006;Gardiner 2009).…”
