“…The prolonged isolation and high geological diversity created a wide range of habitats rich in endemic species, particularly on its mountain massifs, where the insularity is strengthened by the altitude and diversity of terrains (MÉDAIL & QUÉZEL, 1997). The Sardinian flora consists of 2408 taxa including 2295 species (CONTI & al., 2005) 168 of which are exclusive endemics (BACCHETTA & al., 2012b).…”

“…Species selection was made following the policy species listed in Habitat Directive and the priority list of the exclusive taxa of Sardinia (Bacchetta et al 2012b), according to the "regional responsibility" criterion. In addition, considering the most threatened priority habitats (sensu Habitat Directive) at the regional level, three structural trees of these habitats were selected.…”

“…Consequently, "priority lists" should be created in order to identify the target species for conservation measures, as the conservation of biodiversity occurs via the implementation of policy with only limited resources (Balmford et al 2005). In this sense, several authors establishing regionallevel priorities identified the "regional responsibility" as the first-order priority at the local level (Gauthier et al 2010;Bacchetta et al 2012aBacchetta et al , 2012bSchatz et al 2014). In this context, conservation efforts in species-rich areas, such as Sardinia, must be oriented towards the policy species and, at the same time, they must consider the criterion of regional responsibility.…”

“…36.1(c)) because it was merely cited as a synonym in Fiori (1904). But subsequently, it was widely used by Italian botanists to define this nothotaxon at the species level (Beguinot & Vaccari 1927, Arrigoni 1972, Bacchetta et al 2012. In this note we start from the Levier's name (handwritten on the label of the type material), we give a diagnosis and indicate the holotype to validate the name C. forsythiana.…”

“…388 that was distributed in the Flora Italica Exsiccata (Fiori et al 1906), but that sample reported is C. filiformis, without any mention of the hybrid taxon. However, the name is actually in use, because it was accepted (though not validly published) in a recent list of Sardinian endemic plants (Bacchetta et al 2012). This taxon has a scientific interest because it is one of the few examples of incipient homoploid hybrid speciation between two narrow endemic species: the parental species are exclusive of Sardinia, C. horrida growing only in the north-western part of the island and C. filiformis in the central-eastern part, and overlapping only at the Tavolara island (Pisanu et al 2011, Mameli et al, in press).…”
