A checklist of the Scarabaeoidea (Coleoptera) of Panama

Abstract: The 541 species of Scarabaeoidea known to occur in Panama are listed. Synonymies are included when present. Names placed in new synonymy are Pelidnota hirsutiphallica Ratcliffe and Jameson (=P. pubes Ohaus) and Bolax vittatus Casey (= B. magnus Bates). All taxa are accompanied by an abbreviated reference to the original literature citation wherein they were described. A list of provinces in Panama in which each species is known to occur is also provided.

“…Ratcliffe has authored or coauthored 39 publications that cover cyclocephaline scarabs, and many of these are monographic in scope (Ratcliffe 1977, 1978, 1981, 1985, 1986, 1989, 1991, 1992a–d, 2002a, b, 2003, 2008, 2014, 2015, Ratcliffe and Cave 2002, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2017, Ratcliffe et al 2013, 2015, Ratcliffe and Delgado-Castillo 1990, Ratcliffe and Hoffman 2011, Ratcliffe and Morón 1997, Ratcliffe and Paulsen 2008, Figueroa and Ratcliffe 2016, Gasca-Álvarez et al 2014, Jameson et al 2002, 2009, Maes and Ratcliffe 1996, Maes et al 1997, Neita-Moreno et al 2006, 2007, Saltin and Ratcliffe 2012). …”

“…The lack of taxonomical and faunistic studies in other Neotropical countries, however, makes it difficult to make comparisons with similar regions, or even to determine which species are endemic. For example, only 42 Anomalini species are registered for Panama (Ratcliffe 2002), and only 79 for Ecuador (which has a surface area five times that of Costa Rica) (Paucar-Cabrera 2005). It is safe to say that most of the Anomalini diversity in the Neotropical region is yet to be described.…”

“…For the Neotropics, only a few national checklists that include Anomalini are available, such as Ratcliffe’s (2002) for Panama and Paucar-Cabrera’s (2005) for Ecuador. Species-level keys are available only for local fauna (e.g., Neita et al 2006; Reyes Novelo and Morón 2005; Carrillo Ruiz and Morón 2003; Alcazar Ruiz et al 2003).…”
