A Checklist of the Seaweeds of the Mediterranean and Atlantic Coasts of Morocco. III. Rhodophyceae (Excluding Ceramiales)

Abstract: A checklist of Moroccan marine Rhodophyceae excluding the members of the Ceramiales, the largest order, based on both literature records and some original data, is presented. The distribution of each taxon for this region (12 Mediterranean and 26 Atlantic localities) is given. Using present-day taxonomy, 218 species, infraspecific taxa and life-history phases are accepted for the Moroccan coasts. Six new combinations are proposed: Phymatolithon calcareum (Pallas) W. H. Adey et McKibbin f. compressum (M'Calla e… Show more

“…Thus, it seems likely that the SIP sample, located in the Mediterranean, could also be a marginal population of G. lanceola . This would be in agreement with the observation that even in Morocco, G. lanceola is common along Atlantic shores (Gayral, ) while it has gone largely unrecorded at Mediterranean locations (Benhissoune et al ., ). Therefore, further work is still needed and, in particular, estimates of genetic diversity for samples collected well within the central range of G. lanceola (i.e.…”

“…Reproductive structures were not seen. Benhissoune et al (2002b) report bibliographically the presence of this species based on Bornet's citation (1892), Debray (1897), Gattefossé and Werner (1935) and Dangeard (1949) for the Atlantic coast of Morocco.…”

Besides the fact that all these species are characterized by an erect thallus attached to the substrata by a single basal part except R. ardissonei, which have a prostate habit, other characters help to distinguish them from R. holmesii.…”

“…La fronde est constituée d'un ensemble d'axes principaux à croissance illimitée porteurs de ramifications latérales à croissance limitée, ce qui donne au thalle une forme pyramidale. Cette espèce forme des peuplements denses sur tous les fonds rocheux en mode battu depuis le niveau des basses mers de vives eaux jusqu'à une profondeur de 20 m [24,25]. G. sesquipedale représente plus de 90 % de la récolte d'algues agarophytes sur les côtes du Maroc.…”
