A Chromium Terephthalate-Based Solid with Unusually Large Pore Volumes and Surface Area

Abstract: We combined targeted chemistry and computational design to create a crystal structure for porous chromium terephthalate, MIL-101, with very large pore sizes and surface area. Its zeotype cubic structure has a giant cell volume (approximately 702,000 cubic angstroms), a hierarchy of extra-large pore sizes (approximately 30 to 34 angstroms), and a Langmuir surface area for N2 of approximately 5900 +/- 300 square meters per gram. Beside the usual properties of porous compounds, this solid has potential as a nanom… Show more

“…The 3D framework of 1 is assembled by the unique nano‐sized [Cu 30 ] cages ( Figure 1 b), which are constructed from 15 Cu 2 (O 2 CR) 4 paddlewheel units and BCP linkers. The shape of [Cu 30 ] cage looks like a distorted censer (Figure S1, Supporting Information), which is distinctive to the reported polyhedral/spherical cages in classic MOFs, for instance, eight [Zn 4 O] units as vertexes construct a cubic cage in MOF‐5, 24 Zn atoms and 48 methylimidazole linkers form a spherical cage in ZIF‐8, etc 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20. Each [Cu 30 ] cage can be divided into two subcages, big cage A and small cage B (Figure 1b) to describe in details.…”

“…Compared with FT-IR spectra of H 2 BDC, NH 2 -BDC and NO 2 -BDC ( Fig. 2a-c), all the bands of protonated carboxylic groups at around 1,710 cm −1 disappear in these three MOFs, indicating that all of the carboxyl groups were coordinated with Cr 3+ [28]. The IR spectra of NH 2 -MIL-101(Cr) show the vibrational bands of the amino-groups at around 3,337 and 3,467 cm −1 [29,30].…”
