A Classification Method for CSCW Systems

Abstract: Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) is a research field where the role played by individuals as members of groups is fundamental. The human being is not considered as an individual entity, but it is considered as a being embedded into the society, where he works and interacts. From the beginning, many CSCW systems have arisen. Some taxonomies appeared in order to find a way to classify all these tools, but they have become more and more complicated, therefore nowadays such classifications cannot sort th… Show more

“…Computer-supported cooperative work has traditionally defined various aspects of collaboration through Johansen's two dimensional time-space matrix (Penichet et al 2007). The matrix depicts four spaces: face to face interactions (e.g., Techmeeting rooms), remote interactions (e.g., Desktop sharing conferencing systems), ongoing tasks (e.g., Group bulletin board displays), and coordination (e.g., Asynchronous conferencing bulletin boards).…”

“…The most well developed of these is the so-called Space-Time diagram, usually just called the "CSCW Matrix", devised by Johansen [16,17] which became the de facto standard taxonomy with which to analyse tools and technology [18,19,20].…”

“…Annually, new classes of mobile devices are added to the traditional desktop, laptop, tablet, and smartphones. However, computer-based collaboration encompasses complex hardware and software issues that have been in the focus of the research community for a long time [2]. In 1981, Johnson-Lenz coined the term groupware as 'intentional group processes plus software to support them' [3].…”
