Abstract. An experimental study was conducted to improve the strength of foamed concrete by adding fibres reinforced material, polypropylene (PP) fibres. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of PP fibres on the microstructure and tensile strength of foamed concrete. Foamed concrete with density 1600 kg/m 3 and 1800 kg/m 3 were cast and tested with 0.05%, 0.10% and 0.15% percentage of PP fibres. The findings shows that foamed concrete added by PP fibres gave better performance in tensile strength compared to foamed concrete without PP fibres. With the addition of 0.05% of PP fibres, the tensile strength increased by 35.06% and 40.30% for foamed concrete with densities 1600 kg/m 3 and 1800 kg/m 3 , respectively. Through the study of microstructure of foamed concrete, the air voids of foamed concrete with various densities and the interfacial adhesion between concrete and fibres were observed. The foamed concrete added by PP fibres gave better performance in tensile strength compared to foamed concrete without PP fibres.

Abstract. Lightweight construction material, notably foamed concrete, had become more favourable to reduce building weight and cost, accelerate construction process, and ease handling of precast segment. Simultaneously, rapid development had result in price rising of conventional material and environmental issue due to abundant wastes, for instance steel slag. As a consequence, feasibility of steel slag to be incorporated in lightweight foamed concrete for both structural and nonstructural purpose is worth to be investigated. This paper is aimed to evaluate the effects of crushed steel slag, as partial replacement of sand with specific gradation, on performance of lightweight foamed concrete (LFC) with density of 1600 kg/m 3 to 1700 kg/m 3 in terms of compressive and tensile strengths. Different steel slag based LFCs were developed by replacing 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% of steel slag for sand. Different water to cement ratios (w/c) and dosages of super-plasticizer (sp) were adopted to confirm certain workability, strength properties was then studied for ages of 7 and 28 days. The laboratory results showed that lightweight foamed concrete with incorporation of crushed steel slag has decreased strength; however it still achieves structural strength of 17 MPa when replacement level is less than 25% at density of 1600 kg/m 3 to 1700 kg/m 3 .

Taking lessons from nature offers an increasing promise toward improved performance in man‐made materials. Here new cement materials with unidirectionally porous architectures are developed by replicating the designs of natural wood using a simplified ice‐templating technique in light of the retention of ice‐templated architectures by utilizing the self‐hardening nature of cement. The wood‐like cement exhibits higher strengths at equal densities than other porous cement‐based materials along with unique multifunctional properties, including effective thermal insulation at the transverse profile, controllable water permeability along the vertical direction, and the easy adjustment to be water repulsive by hydrophobic treatment. The strengths are quantitatively interpreted by discerning the effects of differing types of pores using an equivalent element approach. The simultaneous achievement of high strength and multifunctionality makes the wood‐like cement promising for applications as new building materials, and verifies the effectiveness of wood‐mimetic designs in creating new high‐performance materials. The simple fabrication procedure by omitting the freeze‐drying treatment can also promote a better efficiency of ice‐templating technique for the mass production in engineering and may be extended to other material systems.
