A clinical assessment of the anterior eye in arc welders

Abstract: Repeated occupational ultraviolet radiation exposure through welding is not associated with any obvious differences in the corneal endothelium. No differences were observed in either ECD or cell polymegethism. Despite the periodic welding flashes, the exposure levels are below those needed to cause damage to the corneal endothelium.

“…It is however contrary to the report of Ichiro 24 who reported a higher prevalence of pterygium among welders in Japan. Differences in succeptibility and additional climatic differences have also been proposed as possible explanations for this variation 23 Pterygium was the second common eye disorder among the welders in this study with a prevalence of 17.5%.…”

“…Although chronic irritation and inflammation occurring at the ocular surface may contribute to pterygium development, intracellular damage accruing from ultraviolet exposure is the most important etiology. [2][3][4][5][6] It is known that ultraviolet radiation is mutagenic for the p53 tumor suppressor gene and can elicit DNA mutation and activate transcription factors, such as AP-1 and NF-kB, leading to the induction of collagen-degrading metalloproteinases. 7,8 Pterygium usually arises in the superficial layers of the nasal cornea and can seriously compromise vision if it encroaches on the visual axis.…”

“…Nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) was reported to occur in welders who were exposed to intense ultraviolet irradiation (Currie and Monk 2000;Young 1994). That UVR from arc welding causes injuries in the workplace has been well documented and diseases from arc welding have been noted in some welders (Doughty and Oblak 2005;Magnavita 2002;Fich et al 1993;Norn and Frank 1991;Power et al 1991;Brittain 1988;Cellini et al 1987;Karai and Horiguchi 1984;Emmett et al 1981).…”
