A Clinical Case of Unilateral Ovarian Dysgerminoma and Pyometra in a Bitch

Abstract: A clinical case of an 11-year-old bitch with unilateral ovarian dysgerminoma and pyometra is described. The owner reported purulent discharge from external genitalia, fastidious appetite and depression. Transabdominal ultrasonography of the reproductive organs showed a hypoechoic mass in the region of the left ovary (7.18 × 6.65 cm) and a strongly enlarged uterine lumen full of anechoic fluid. Vaginal cytology demonstrated about 50% superficial cornfield epithelial cells and multiple neutrophils. Complete bloo… Show more

“…Some patients presented cystic endometrium hyperplasia, pyometra and consistent oestrus. These signs are related with hormones over-production (Greenlee and Patnaik 1985;Jackson et al 1985;Rolim et al 2010;Novotny et al 2011;Antonov et al 2014). Our case study describes ovarian dysgerminoma associated metastasis in the spleen of a bitch.…”

“…When ovarian neoplasia is suspected, measuring hormone levels could give useful information about the biologic nature of the tumor. At the moment reports of hormonal production by dysgerminomas are too few both in human and veterinary medicine (ANTONOV et al, 2014).…”

“…In the case of the ovarian dysgerminoma reported herein, diagnosis of ovarian tumor was reached based on the history of estrous cycles and ultrasonography, which is the technique of choice to detect ovarian cysts or tumors (DIEZ BRU et al, 1998). Also, ultrasound allows for the detection of uterine anomalies, ascites and lymphadenophaties (KLEIN, 2007;NOVOTNY et al;2011;ANTONOV et al 2014). When there is effusion, abdominocentesis and thoracocentesis should be performed (MCENTEE, 2002), and a cytological analysis requested.…”
