“…Regarding the distribution of specific malocclusions for each tooth, curvatures most frequently affected incisor teeth while sharp enamel points plagued cheek teeth. In the case of incisor teeth, the line created by the occlusal surfaces between the maxillary and mandibular incisors should lie on the horizontal plane, and any deviation thereof, be it ventral, dorsal, diagonal, or irregular, constitutes an abnormality [ 46 ]. In the current study, ventral curvature was found in 157 horses.…”

“…Irregular curvature and diagonal bite were found in 21 and 10 horses respectively, whereas dorsal curvature was not observed. Depending on recent reports, ventral curvature may be considered an acquired, age-related disorder, probably secondary to cheek teeth disorders [ 46 ] or correct conformation [ 9 ]. However, regardless of this characterization, the gradual correction of ventral curvature is recommended to restore the correct conformation of the incisors, thus avoiding the development of an abnormal occlusal surface [ 46 ], which may affect the horse’s chewing ability [ 47 ].…”

“…In this regard, Valle et al [47] proposed a scoring system to monitor the ability of donkeys to chew. Dental disorders in donkeys have been shown to be one of the major and most frequently underestimated problems for the welfare of donkeys [25] and are often the least recognised and/or treated [51]. Rodrigues et al [51] found that most donkeys with documented dental disorders showed few to no signs of pain.…”

Rodrigues et al [51] found that most donkeys with documented dental disorders showed few to no signs of pain. Therefore, since it may be difficult for an owner or practitioners to recognise these conditions, it is important to subject the animals to regular and scheduled dental checks.…”
