A closer look at pain and hepatitis C: Preliminary data from a veteran population

Abstract: Abstract-An association between the hepatitis C virus (HCV) and various pain diagnoses, including arthritis, fibromyalgia, and peripheral neuropathy, has been reported. In this article, we review the literature on the relationship between HCV and pain, highlighting current knowledge as well as methodological issues that exist in many studies. We also present preliminary findings from a survey conducted at two Department of Veterans Affairs facilities to assess the scope and impact of pain on functioning in vet… Show more

“…15,16 Heterogeneous clinical conditions account for the sites of pain-low back, legs, total body-that comprise the majority of pain complaints among opioid-dependent patients. 6,17 Pain in this population has been attributed to past traumatic injuries, chronic medical conditions, human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis C virus infection, 18,19 opioid-induced hyperalgesia, 20 and non-specific factors unrelated to opioid withdrawal. 17 While buprenorphine has analgesic properties, it is not typically initiated, dosed, or directed toward pain relief in opioid-dependent persons.…”

“…Given that the literature describes opioid-using populations to be at increased risk of hepatitis B, 21 hepatitis C, 21,22 HIV, 23 depression, [24][25][26] and anxiety, 27 data regarding these conditions were obtained from birth certificate data and from outpatient and hospital administrative records by using diagnostic codes (hepatitis B: 070.2x and 070.3x; hepatitis C: 070. 41 …”
