In recent decades, video compression has become the primary focus of intensive studies. Besides there is a great development in video compression technique in these days; and this technique is used in large number of applications. Video compression techniques is used to reduce and remove the less important video data and so the digital video data will be sent effectively and received over a network and stored on computer disks. In this paper, the research is set out with an idea about various techniques available for video compression. Nowadays, numerous video compression techniques were introduced. Those are with significant compression techniques, a vita land the reduced file will be gained without any loss in effect in the visual quality. H.265/HEVC exhibits higher improvement in coding performance over its predecessors. These are both VCEG and MPEG articulating the next generation norms. The overview of the advancement of these next-generation video coding initiatives and current upcoming video coding techniques was provided in this research work. Several papers and research materials were published related to these subject and some of these are taken for this research study. This survey is conducted to define the different fundamental methods available for video compression; video compression techniques application strategies ; different generations; the upcoming video compression techniques and trends; various issues parallel with the emerging technologies.

Following the finalization of the state-of-the-art High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard in January 2013, several new services are being deployed in order to take advantage of the superior coding efficiency (estimated at 50 % less bitrate for the same visual quality) that this standard provides over its predecessor: H.264 / Advanced Video Coding (AVC). However, the switch from AVC to HEVC is not trivial as most video content is still encoded in AVC. Consequently, there is a growing need for fast AVC to HEVC transcoders in the market today. While a trivial transcoder can be made by simply cascading an AVC decoder and an HEVC encoder, fast transcoding cannot be achieved. In this paper, we present an AVC to HEVC transcoder where decoded AVC blocks are first fused according to their motion similarity. The resulting fusion map is then used to limit the quadtree of HEVC coded frames. AVC motion vectors are also used to determine a better starting point for integer motion estimation. Experimental results show that significant transcoder execution time savings of 63 % can be obtained with only a 1.4 % bitrate increase compared to the trivial transcoder.

In this paper, we propose a fast mode decision framework and a fast motion estimation algorithm for H.264 to High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) transcoding. The fast mode decision framework employs a post-order (bottom-up) traversal of the coding tree unit (CTU) quadtree. Based on this traversal and H.264 information, several strategies are proposed to reduce HEVC modes to be tested and a ratedistortion (RD) cost prediction model is used to terminate the processing of a tested mode early. The proposed fast motion estimation algorithm selects the best candidate from a list of H.264 motion vectors (MVs) and previously encoded HEVC MVs. Compared to a full re-encoding, experimental results show that the proposed solution achieves speed-ups of up to 12.75x, for an average BD-Rate of 3.28%.
