A coloured polyester fabric with antimicrobial properties conferred by copper nanoparticles

Abstract: In this study, we aimed to produce a coloured polyester fabric through the in situ sonosynthesis of copper nanoparticles using copper sulphate, hydrazine, sodium hydroxide and polyvinylpyrrolidone. The treated fabrics were characterised by X‐ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy and elemental mapping. Moreover, mechanical properties, wettability and antibacterial/antifungal activities of the treated fabrics were evaluated. Central composite design ba… Show more

“…Following on, copper nanoparticles are also used to produce coloured polyester fabric via in situ sonosynthesis of copper nanoparticles from copper sulphate along with the presence of hydrazine, sodium hydroxide and polyvinylpyrrolidone. 23 After the treatment, the white fabric obtains a reddish brown hue (see Figure 12) and exhibits excellent antibacterial and antifungal properties. In some applications, copper nanoparticles show their catalytic action in imparting flame inhibition properties to various polymeric materials while being used as an additive or a synergistic agent in a typical flame retardant treatment.…”
