A combination atmospheric pressure LC/MS:GC/MS ion source: Advantages of dual AP-LC/MS:GC/MS instrumentation

Abstract: Modification of commercial LC/MS instrumentation to allow both atmospheric pressure (AP) LC/MS and GC/MS is described. Advantages of this additional capability versus LC/MS alone include higher chromatographic resolution in the GC versus LC mode, greater peak capacity for complex mixture analysis, higher sensitivity for a variety of volatile compounds, and the ability to observe compounds of low polarity that are not readily observed in LC/MS. Advantages over conventional GC/MS include the ability to use highe… Show more

“…In this method the cells are inserted directly into a hot nitrogen stream, thus eliminating extensive sample workup before analysis. Data We recently reported modifications of commercial liquid chromatograph/mass spectrometer ion sources to also accommodate gas chromatography/AP-mass spectrometry analyses and demonstrated the advantages of the additional capabilities this modification affords [1,2]. Also introduced was a method we called atmospheric solids analysis probe (ASAP) for rapidly analyzing volatile or semivolatile liquid or solid materials using only slightly modified commercial ESI or APCI ion sources [3].…”

“…ESI is used for polar compounds and APCI, and APPI is deployed for middle to nonpolar molecules [2]. Gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is usually performed with electron impact (EI) and chemical ionization (CI) at reduced pressure [3]. For ionization at atmospheric pressure following the separation of compounds via GC, APCI is used [4].…”

“…The API interface designed by McEwen was adopted for the current study. 9 The only major difference is that Thermo Finnigan's Ion MAX source allows simultaneous operation of APPI and APCI. We used only APPI in the current study but the use of APCI or both will be investigated in the future.…”
