A Combined Phenotypic and Metabolomic Approach for Elucidating the Biostimulant Action of a Plant-Derived Protein Hydrolysate on Tomato Grown Under Limited Water Availability

Abstract: Plant-derived protein hydrolysates (PHs) are an important category of biostimulants able to increase plant growth and crop yield especially under environmental stress conditions. PHs can be applied as foliar spray or soil drench. Foliar spray is generally applied to achieve a relatively short-term response, whereas soil drench is used when a long-term effect is desired. The aim of the study was to elucidate the biostimulant action of PH application method (foliar spray or substrate drench) on morpho-physiologi… Show more

“…The legume-derived PH biostimulant obtained through enzymatic hydrolysis contains 75% of free amino acids and peptides, 22% of carbohydrates and 3% of mineral nutrients. The detailed aminogram (Ala, Arg, Asp, Cys, Glu, Gly, His, Ile, Leu, Lys, Met, Phe, Pro, Ser, Thr, Trp, Tyr, and Val) of the product along with the phenolics, flavonoids, and elemental composition were reported in detail by Rouphael et al [28] and Paul et al [44]. No detectable phytohormones in the commercial PH have been recorded.…”

“…Samples (1.0 g) were extracted in 10 mL of 0.1% formic acid in 80% aqueous methanol using an Ultra-Turrax (Ika T-25, Staufen, Germany) and centrifuged (12,000× g). The metabolic profile was investigated by using UHPLC-QTOF mass spectrometry as previously reported [63]. Briefly, a JetStream electrospray ionization source and a G6550 QTOF coupled to a 1290 ultra-high-performance liquid chromatograph (Agilent technologies, Santa Clara, CA, USA) were used.…”

“…Hence, very recent papers showed that the use of a "multi-omics" approach, in particular metabolomics and plant phenotyping, represents an effective tool to examine plant performances under different experimental conditions [24,34]. The application of such integrated approach could offer a better explanation of the mechanism(s) of action of different PBS molecules or compounds on crops.…”
