A Compact Optical Switch via Plasmonics of Subwavelength Circular‐Sharp Hole Arrays in Metal Films

Abstract: We studied numerically the enhanced optical transmission (EOT) through periodic subwavelength circular-sharp hole arrays in metallic films with different edge sharp distribution features of unit structures. Detailed studies indicate that the unit structure edge sharp distribution features strongly influence the surface plasmons (SPs). These results demonstrate that the number of edge sharp activated the localized surface plamons (LSP) resonance on the unit structure is changed by rotating the polarization of t… Show more

“…Also, an Ag-air grating with the period of w g + g = 130 nm is used on top of the structure to help the SPs excitation, when the incident lightwave impinges on the structure. The dielectric layer is quartz with the permittivity of ε r = 2.25 and the silver is modeled according to the Johnson and Christy data 37,38 . The absorption coefficient (A) can be given by 39 :…”

“…The process of changing the incident lightwave polarization does not be considered in calculation of the response time. Another main parameter of a plasmonic switch is extinction ratio that exhibits the difference between the absorption values in "ON" and "OFF" states 37 :…”

“…The most common way to achieve switching capability is changing the refractive index of material, which can be achieved by using adjustable PCMs such as GST, VO 2 and other tunable materials such as graphene and liquid crystals. Changing the polarisation of incident light is another way to achieve switching mechanism [5]. The most important factors of a switch are extinction ratio, response time and optical bandwidth.…”

“…Through the construction of bullseye [6] and hoof-shaped [7] structures, the subwavelength metal structure has high transmittance and application prospect in enhancing optical transmission effect. Besides, these characteristics of the SPs have major applications [8][9][10] in ultra-high resolution imaging [11][12][13], inverse design [14], complementary metal oxide semiconducto (CMOS) digital integrated circuit [15][16][17], light emitting diode [18], steganography [19], and many other fields. Among of them, plasmonic optical Appl.…”
